Recruitment
Lord KItchener's Propaganda Poster promoting the army
At the start of the war, Britain had 120'000 soilders in the army. It was clear that they would need more soilders to win the war. Lord Kitchener, the war minister, started recruiting men aged 18- 30 to fight for their country. Men in their hundreds flocked to sign-up. Many thought the war was going to be over by Christmas and it would be a good adventure to have, others thought they had to do their duty for their country. By mid-September over 500'000 people had joined. The youngest person to fight was only aged 13! Lord Kitchener introduced the Pal's Battalion where friends and family could fight together. This persuaded lots of people to join, sometimes whole streets, and villages signed up. However if the battalion suffered losses the whole community would be affected.
